‘This Just In’ – Your Weekly Guide to New Classical Releases

Each Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM, “This Just In” brings you three hours of the newest classical releases to help you decide what deserves a place on your playlist or your shelf.

This week, Raymond Jones opens with Mily Balakirev’s Symphony No. 1 in C major, conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. This performance comes from Warner Classics’ 2025 comprehensive box set of Beecham’s complete stereo recordings in a newly remastered sound.

From Naxos comes a significant contribution to the Florence Price discography: Violin Concerto No. 2 in D major, performed by French violinist Fanny Clamagirard, with the Malmö Opera Orchestra under John Jeter.

We continue our traversal of the Shostakovich symphonies with Symphony No. 13, “Babi Yar,” performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, the London Philharmonic Choir, bass Vitalij Kowaljow, all under Gianandrea Noseda. This recording is included in the LSO Live’s complete Shostakovich cycle, one of the most ambitious releases in the current symphonic catalog.

Choral color arrives with Elizabeth Poston’s “An English Day Book” for chorus and harp, performed by Corvus Consort with harpist Louise Thompson, from Chandos’ recent release “Welcome Joy: A Celebration of Women’s Voices.”

Finally, we explore the legacy of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and his daughter Avril Coleridge-Taylor. From Avie comes Samuel’s “Suite from 24 Negro Folk Melodies,” performed by the National Philharmonic under Michael Repper. And following that, we’ll have Avril’s “Comet Prelude” performed by the BBC Philharmonic under John Andrews from a recent Resonus release.

Historic remasterings, important rediscoveries, and powerful contemporary cycles, all in one evening. Hear it all this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3 or online.
