Tune in for an early Valentines edition of the Best of Pickin for two hours of songs all about love and love gone wrong. We'll hear tracks from Sam Bush Alison Krauss, Reno and Smiley, Code Blue, The Steep Canyon Rangers, and plenty of others. The Steep Canyon Rangers formed in 2000 when the members were students at the University of North Carolina. They had a large regional following but shot to national fame and recognition in 2009 when they went out on tour with Steve Martin and a year later recorded the acclaimed "Rare Bird Alert" that was nominated for a Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album. The release featured Martin, Paul McCartney, and The Dixie Chicks. In 2013, they won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album for the Nobody Knows You release. Their 2015 album Radio, peaked at number one of the Bluegrass album chart. It's all about Love on the Valentines edition of The Best of Pickin. Friday night 10-12 on WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
