Tune in to WHRO-FM this Saturday at 1 p.m. for Mozart’s “Idomeneo,” part of the ongoing Artist’s Choice series from the Met Opera. Joyce DiDonato has selected this broadcast in honor of the beloved American mezzo-soprano Federica von Stade, whose portrayal of Idamante remains one of the role’s most admired interpretations.
This 1986 Met performance stars tenor David Rendall in the title role of the tormented King of Crete, who is burdened by a desperate vow he made to the gods. Mezzo-soprano Federica von Stade sings his courageous son, the brave and passionate prince Idamante. They’re joined by Benida Valente as the Trojan princess Ilia, Hildegard Behrens as the jealous Elettra, and John Alexander as Idomeneo’s loyal confidant. Maestro Jeffrey Tate leads the Met Orchestra and Chorus in one of Mozart’s earliest dramatic masterpieces.
Spend your Valentine’s Day afternoon with great voices, high drama, and sublime Mozart. Listen at 1 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3 or online for this powerful broadcast from the Met.
