The Harold Smith Collection on Sunday's Pickin

This week's Pickin features a true treasure trove of artists all courtesy of long-time Pickin Producer Harold Smith, who over 25 years has shaped and molded the program to reflect the traditional sound of Bluegrass as established by the first generation of starts who launched the genre. Harold (or as I always like to refer to him " Mr. Smith") has donated his vast cd collection to be incorporated into the WHRO Library. This gesture follows his 2007 donation of his papers and artifacts to WHRO to create a permanent collection after being in the music industry for over four decades as a performer with the famed "East Virginia Band" that was a staple on the Bluegrass music circuit and recorded numerous albums. The cd collection features countless recordings from artists like Bill Monroe, Del McCoury, Flatt and Scruggs, and many others. On this weekend's Pickin- the first of many "Harold Smith Collection" programs featuring his exclusive collection. Tune in for two hours of the music that Harold played, treasured, programmed, and now donated. Pickin on WHRV airs Sunday 7-9 on 89.5 WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
