Sam Bush plays Hartford on The Best of Pickin

Catch late-night Americana on this week's Best of Pickin with the wonderful 2022 album "Radio John: Songs of John Hartford by Sam Bush." Hartford was Bush's mentor and musical hero, and the album presents a great overview of his work. Also, music from the mew Billy Strings album "Highway Prayers" that just won Strings his third Bluegrass Grammy Award. Also, a track with Alison Krauss teaming with John Waite on his song" Missing You." The song is from the release "A Hundred Miles or More" which Krauss put out in 2007. Also, traditional Bluegrass from Larry Sparks, The Lonesome River Band, Tony Rice, Del McCoury and others. Why head out on a cold Winter's Night when there's great Americana music on WHRV? Tune in Friday night 10-12 on 89.5

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
