This Saturday, February 7, at 1 p.m., WHRO-FM 90.3 presents the first broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera’s 2025-26 Artist’s Choice series, a special segment where current Met stars honor the legendary performers who inspired them. Tenor Lawrence Brownlee opens the series with a heartfelt tribute to Alfredo Kraus in Massenet’s "Werther."
This historic 1979 performance features the great Spanish tenor in his signature role as the sensitive young poet, whose passionate love for Charlotte cannot overcome the boundaries of duty and society. Opposite him, French soprano Régine Crespin brings depth and nuance to Charlotte, while the young Kathleen Battle shines as her sister Sophie. Baritone Lenus Carlson completes the principal cast, with Richard Bonynge conducting Massenet’s lyrical and heartbreaking score.
Tune in to WHRO-FM 90.3, or listen online, for an afternoon of exquisite singing, stirring drama, and a chance to hear one of opera’s most iconic interpretations of Werther.
