Enjoy three hours of new classical music releases each Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM with ‘This Just In.’ This week, Raymond Jones brings a curated selection of recently released recordings that span symphony mastery, Romantic lyricism, and compelling voices.

The program opens with a birthday celebration for Franz Schubert, who would have turned 229 years old this week. We’ll hear his Symphony No. 6 in C major, conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This performance is included in a recently released Warner Classics collection devoted to Beecham’s legacy.

From the American music scene comes Michael Daugherty’s “Tales of Hemingway,” with cellist Zuill Bailey featured alongside the Nashville Symphony Orchestra under Giancarlo Guerrero. Daugherty’s dramatic cello concerto is inspired by four of Ernest Hemingway’s major works: “Big Two-Hearted River,” “From Whom the Bells Toll,” “The Old Man and the Sea,” and “The Sun Also Rises.” This recording won multiple Grammy Awards, including Best Classical Instrumental Solo and Best Contemporary Classical Composition.

Continuing our ongoing exploration of the Shostakovich symphonies under Gianandrea Noseda, we’ll have Shostakovich’s Symphony No 11 “The Year 1905” with the London Symphony Orchestra. The Eleventh evokes the 1905 Russian Revolution with powerful and cinematic intensity.

Chamber music enthusiasts will enjoy Antonín Dvořák’s Piano Trio No. 4 in E minor “Dumky,” performed by the Mithras Trio and featured on the BBC Music Magazine album “Piano Trios, works by Beethoven, Dvořák and Beach,” released last year.

And from the Resonus Classics album “Avril Coleridge-Taylor: Piano concertos & Orchestral Works,” released last November, we’ll hear “From the Hills” performed by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra under John Andrews.

Hear these new releases this Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM 90.3, and also online, and let Raymond Jones keep you updated with the freshest recordings and standout voices in classical music today.
