Tune in to WHRO-FM this Saturday at 1 p.m. for a live Metropolitan Opera broadcast of the Gershwins' “Porgy and Bess.”
Bass-baritone Alfred Walker and soprano Brittany Renee headline this defining work of American music drama. They are Porgy and Bess, two outsiders whose unexpected love offers a fragile sense of hope amid hardship, painting a vivid portrait of life in Catfish Row, a tight-knit community in Charleston, South Carolina.
The outstanding cast includes Suffolk native Ryan Speedo Green as the violent Crown, Norfolk native Freddie Ballentine as the sly drug dealer Sportin’ Life, Leah Hawkins as the grieving Serena, and Vuvu Mpofu as Clara, whose famous lullaby “Summertime” opens the opera. Legendary mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves appears as Maria in what she has announced will be her final performance on the operatic stage.
On the podium, the acclaimed Trinidadian-Canadian conductor Kwamé Ryan makes his network broadcast debut leading the Met Orchestra and Chorus.
Join us this Saturday at 1 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3 for this powerful live broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera. You can listen on the radio or stream online and experience one of the most important works in American opera, brought to life by an exceptional cast and orchestra.
