Sample three hours of new classical music releases this Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM.
Raymond Jones is your host for ‘This Just In,’ and he has for you this week the Symphony No. 10 by Dmitri Shostakovich, heard in a powerful live performance by the London Symphony Orchestra under Gianandrea Noseda. This recording forms part of the LSO’s newly released complete Shostakovich symphonic cycle, a landmark project we’ve been exploring over recent weeks.
From the Nordic repertoire comes Edvard Grieg’s “Old Norwegian Romance with Variations,” conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. This performance appears in Warner Classics’ 2025 comprehensive box set of Beecham’s complete stereo recordings, capturing the conductor’s late-1950s interpretations.
The program also features selections from Schumann’s song cycle “Dichterliebe (Poet’s Love),” presented here in an arrangement for bassoon and piano. Bassoonist Franc Morelli explores these Romantic songs in a new light, as part of an album created to mark his long musical career. The transcriptions highlight the bassoon’s lyrical qualities, offering a fresh perspective on Schumann’s music.
Choral music takes center stage with Joel Thompson’s “A Prayer for Deliverance,” performed by Tenebrae on the Signum label. The album has received widespread critical acclaim, earning recognition as a Finalist for Presto Music’s Recording of the Year 2025 and accolades from BBC Music Magazine for its emotional power and contemporary relevance.
Rounding out the program is Havergal Brian’s Symphony No. 6 “Sinfonia Tragica,” performed by the English National Opera Orchestra under Martyn Brabbins. This recording appears on Hyperion’s release “Havergal Brian: Agamemnon & Symphonies Nos. 6 & 12,” issued this month.
