Join host Raymond Jones Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM for ‘This Just In,’ three hours of new classical releases that will keep you up to date on what’s current on CD and streaming in the classical music world.
One centerpiece this week is Dimitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9 as performed by the London Symphony Orchestra under Gianandrea Noseda. This work appears as part of the new complete cycle of all 15 Shostakovich symphonies released by the orchestra’s own LSO Live label in November 2025.
From the Nordic-influenced side of the repertoire, we turn to Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, played by Paul Lewis with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Dalia Stasevska. This concerto, performed at the BBC Proms 2023, remains one of the most beloved Romantic works for piano and orchestra.
Chamber music lovers will enjoy Claude Debussy’s Violin Sonata, taken from the Hyperion release “Debussy: String Quartet & Sonatas” by members of the Nash Ensemble. This 2025 album gathers Debussy’s late chamber works, and specifically, this Violin Sonata has been consistently identified as a standout track.
Raymond Jones will also feature Antonio Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons.” Violinist Lynda O’Connor leads the ensemble Anamus in this Avie Records release entitled “The Irish Seasons,” a work that pairs Vivaldi’s familiar cycle with a contemporary Irish response to it.
And rounding out the program is Richard Strauss’s tone poem “A Hero’s Life” performed by JoAnn Falletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic, from the recent Beau Fleuve release of the same name.
Tune in this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. to WHRO-FM 90.3 to hear these and other exciting new recordings. You can also listen to “This Just In” through our Media Player or your smart device.
