Enter the 2026 PBS Kids Writers Contest

Male student writing in a notebook

If you are in grades K-5 and like to write and draw, pick up those pencils! We want to hear your best stories.

WHRO Public Media invites kindergarten through 5th-grade students to create a great story, illustrate it, and enter it in the PBS KIDS Writers Contest. Stories can be fact or fiction, poetry or prose, and will be judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling, and integration of illustrations.

Students can write about any topic of their choice, such as friendship, kindness, their family, or something that they like, just to name a few. Or students can choose to write an environmental story for an opportunity to win the Batten Environmental Education Award.

Entries are now being accepted for our annual writing contest, and we expect to receive many great stories! Be sure to get yours entered before the deadline. Stories are due by Friday, March 20.

All students entering the contest will receive a special PBS KIDS Certificate. First-place and second-place winners will be named in each grade level. Winners and their families will be invited to WHRO Public Media for a celebration of the WHRO Young Storytellers awards program. We appreciate your help getting students involved with this fun and creative contest!

Winners may also be featured on Ms. Martha Reads!
Meet last year's winners and watch them read their stories.
