A World of New Music Lights Up December

Tune in this Saturday evening at 8:00 to WHRO-FM and enjoy three hours devoted to the newest classical releases with Raymond Jones and “This Just In.”

This week’s program continues our ongoing journey through Inbal Megiddo’s newly released recording of Bach’s Six Cello Suites. After exploring the first two, we now arrive at Suite No. 3, a work Megiddo associates with the confidence and expanding horizons of early adulthood.

Strings remain in the spotlight with a fresh release from Bridge: Beethoven’s “12 Variations on a Theme from Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus,” performed by cellist Emanuel Gruber and pianist Arnon Erez as part of their ongoing survey “Beethoven: Music for Cello and Piano.”

From the UK comes a celebration of an 80th birthday: Graham Ross and the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, honor composer John Rutter with “The Christmas Edition,” a new album featuring Rutter's works tied to the College. We’ll hear “The Gift of Life,” a radiant choral cycle inspired by creation, and seasonal selections including the first recording of “A Ukrainian Prayer.”

We then head south for a vibrant take on the holidays: “A Cuban Christmas,” featuring horn virtuoso Sarah Willis and her ensemble Sarahbanda. Expect rhythmic sparkle, color, and even a Cuban-infused Nutcracker Suite that reframes Tchaikovsky with irresistible Havana flair.

The program closes with a recent release from Toccata: Arnold Rosner’s “Lovely Joan – Rhapsody on an English Folksong,” performed by Density512. This orchestral wind arrangement brings a fresh perspective to a beloved English melody.

Enjoy a wealth of new classical releases this and every Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM 90.3, and also online, with “This Just In.”
