Unwrapping New Classical Releases for December with ‘This Just In’

Find out what’s new in recorded classical music each Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM with “This Just In.” Raymond Jones invites you to start “unwrapping” the season’s newest classical releases, blending fresh discoveries with a festive touch to welcome December.

A highlight of the program is a dazzling new Hyperion recording: pianist Andrey Gugnin reimagines Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker” through Mikhail Pletnev’s virtuosic piano arrangement, an atmospheric way to welcome December’s festive mood.

From Cappella Records, we feature “Christmas at the Castle,” a newly released album that traces a remarkable Greek Christmas miracle. The ensembles Psaltikon and En Chordais are taking this music on tour across the country this month, making this release especially timely.

Last week, we began our journey through Bach’s six Cello Suites with Inbal Megiddo, and this week it’s time for the second one. Megiddo sees the set as a musical journey through life: the radiant innocence of the First Suite gives way to the deeper, more turbulent introspection of the Second, music she associates with the emotional terrain of adolescence.

We’ll also bring you Beethoven’s “12 Variations on a Theme from Mozart’s The Magic Flute,” performed by Emanuel Gruber and Arnon Erez. And our ongoing survey of the LSO Live Shostakovich cycle will continue this week with the Symphony No. 6, performed in concert by the London Symphony Orchestra under Gianandrea Noseda.

Unwrap the season this Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM, and also online, with “This Just In.”
