A Night of Brilliant New Performances

Musicians of the Old Post Road

Musicians of the Old Post Road

Join Raymond Jones this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM for “This Just In,” your weekly showcase of the latest classical releases.

Your favorite host will open the program with a captivating performance of Bach’s “Partita No. 6,” played with exceptional finesse by pianist Robert Levin, featured on a recent release from Le Palais des Dégustateurs.

Next comes a bright discovery from the ensemble Musicians of the Old Post Road: Christoph Graupner’s Flute Concerto in D, part of their new album “Into the Light,” released under their own newly founded label.

Staying on the realm of chamber brilliance, you’ll hear Beethoven’s Cello Sonata No. 4, performed by cellist Emanuel Gruber with pianist Arnon Erez, a standout track from the recent Bridge Records release “Beethoven: Music for Cello & Piano.”

We then turn to English composer Thomas Pitfield with his charming “Bucolics – Folk Song Studies,” performed by violinist Emma McGrath and the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra under Paul Mann, from the Toccata release “Thomas Pitfield Orchestra Music.”

Raymond Jones has also lined up a sparkling piano arrangement from Tchaikovsky’s “Sleeping Beauty.” This suite, arranged by Mikhail Pletnev and performed with virtuosic flair by Andrey Gugnin, is included in Hyperion’s “Russian Ballet Suites.”

And to close, our ongoing survey of Shostakovich symphonies continues with Symphony No. 4, in a powerful live performance by the London Symphony Orchestra led by Gianandrea Noseda, from the LSO Live label.

Hear it all here on WHRO-FM 90.3, and also online through our Media Player. Tune in this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. and discover these remarkable new releases with Raymond Jones and “This Just In.”
