This week on The Best of Pickin- Greensky Bluegrass celebrates 25 years of performing

This week's Best of Pickin features the new release from Greensky Bluegrass as they celebrate 25 years in Bluegrass music. The band formed in 2000 in Kalamazoo, Michigan and within a few years were developing a rabid fan base. They won the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Band competition in 2006. Their new release is simply entitled with the roman numeral for 25- XXV. We'll hear from the album, and also music from the Alison Krauss grammy nominated "Arcadia" album, as well as the new Willie Nelson tribute cd to Merle Haggard "Working Man: Willie Sings Merle." And for the lovers of traditional Bluegrass, we'll have tracks from the Lonesome River Band, The Bluegrass Cardinals, Don Rigsby and others, for a jam-packed late-night celebration of Americana music. Tune in Friday night 10-12 here on 89.5 WHRV

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
