Each Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM, host Raymond Jones brings listeners three hours of the latest classical music releases on “This Just In,” a program designed to keep you up to date with the most exciting classical recordings from around the world.
Listeners will be treated to the powerful and rarely heard Symphony No. 3, “First of May,” by Dimitri Shostakovich, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under Gianandrea Noseda, part of the orchestra’s newly completed cycle of Shostakovich symphonies on its own label.
We’ll also hear Bach’s Partita No. 5, performed by pianist Robert Levin, in a new French release from Palais des Dégustateurs, where historical insight meets vibrant musicianship.
From the early Romantic world, Ferdinand Ries takes the spotlight with his Symphony No. 5, performed by the Tapiola Sinfonietta conducted by Janne Nisonen. This work is featured in a recent Ondine recording that shines a new light on Beethoven’s gifted student and friend.
And speaking of Beethoven, his Cello Sonata No. 3 receives a fresh and intimate reading from Emanuel Gruber and Arnon Erez, part of “Beethoven: Music for Cello and Piano” on the Bridge label.
To complete the program, we’ll hear an exquisite choral selection: Daniel-Lesur’s lush setting of “The Song of Songs,” performed by the BBC Singers as a part of a special release marking the ensemble’s centenary.
Tune in this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3, or listen online, for “This Just In,” and discover what’s new, beautiful, and essential in today’s world of classical music.
