The Lilly Brothers on Pickin

This week's Pickin on WHRV brings you the music of the famed Lilly Brothers-Bea and Everett. The duo, born in Mercer County, West Virginia would eventually settle in Boston in the early 60s and were regulars at the famed Hilly Branch venue. They cultivated a fan base after appearing at numerous college folk festivals and are credited with introducing Bluegrass to New England. Ken Irwin, who would go on to found Rounder Records, one of the major labels for Roots music, credited seeing and hearing the Lilly Brothers in Boston as a major influence for his love of the genre. We'll hear several selections of them with their long-time side man Don Stover. Also, new music from Larry Sparks and his "Way Back When" release and also, music from Kody Norris and his latest album" High Falutin Hillbilly." And, tracks from JD Crowe and the groundbreaking "Bluegrass Evolution" album along with James King, and The Stanley Brothers. It's a packed Pickin- tune in Sunday at 7 for two hours of traditional Bluegrass here on 89.5 WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
