If you love discovering the newest sounds in the classical world, tune in this Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM for “This Just In.” Each week, host Raymond Jones guides you through three hours of the latest recordings, from rediscovered treasures to brand-new performances.
The program opens this week with the Symphony No. 2 by Dimitri Shostakovich, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Gianandrea Noseda. This thrilling new release, officially out on November 21, captures the power and energy of a young Shostakovich.
Next, we’ll move to Beethoven’s Cello Sonata No. 2, featuring Emanuel Gruber and Arnon Frez from the album “Beethoven: Music for Cello & Piano,” recently released by Bridge Records. And then we’ll hear the Symphony No. 2 by Ferdinand Ries, one of Beethoven’s most devoted pupils. The Tapiola Sinfonietta, led by Janne Nisonen, brings this vibrant symphony to life in a new Ondine release that also includes Ries’s First Symphony.
The evening continues with the Choirs of the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John in Albuquerque, New Mexico, under Maxine Thévenot and Edmund Connolly.
Raymond Jones will also feature the Sinfonietta by English composer and polymath Thomas Pitfield, performed by the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra under Paul Mann, from a recent Toccata Classics release. And to close the evening, the world-renowned Black Dyke Band performs Philip Wilby’s “Symphonic Variations on Amazing Grace,” a stunning reimagining of the beloved hymn.
