If you enjoy hearing the latest interpretation and newly released recordings in classical music, “This Just In” is your Saturday night destination. Join Raymond Jones this week at 8:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM for three hours filled with musical discoveries.

The program begins with a remarkable rarity: Edvard Grieg’s Symphony in C minor, included in the “Nordic Symphonies” collection we are exploring. Written when the composer was just 20, this youthful symphony is full of promise and energy. Grieg later dismissed it as “never to be performed,” but modern musicians have found in it the seeds of his distinctive Nordic sound.
Also featured this week is the Violin Concerto in B-flat by British composer Ruth Gipps, part of her “Orchestral Works, Vol. 4” recently released by Chandos. This performance features violinist Charlie Lovell-Jones with the BBC Philharmonic under Rumon Gamba.
From the French label Palais des Degustateurs, we’ll hear pianist Robert Levin in Bach’s Partita No. 2 in E minor, a performance that balances precision and imagination in equal measure. And then comes a powerful sibling collaboration, Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason performing Shostakovich’s Cello Sonata in D minor, a deeply emotional work captured in a superb new Decca release.
One of this week’s true highlights is Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 4, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra under Gianandrea Noseda, from an album being released this very Friday. You’ll have the chance to hear it here first!
And to close, we turn to Sergio Assad’s “Gypsy Tales,” performed by the Cavatina Duo with violinist Simin Ganatra, from Cedille’s recent album “River of Fire.”
Tune in to “This Just In” this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3, and also online, for three hours of new classical releases and musical discoveries.
