After 25 years as host and editor of “Performance Today,” the most popular classical music radio show, Fred Child is stepping down on October 31.

For the past two months, Fred has been working part-time, giving listeners the opportunity to hear both him and new host Valerie Kahler together. Beginning November 1, Valerie will take over the program permanently.

During his remarkable tenure leading one of the nation’s most beloved classical music programs, Fred has guided and captivated audiences across the country, combining his genuine passion for classical music with eloquence, deep knowledge, and thoughtful insight.

Listeners will already be familiar with Valerie Kahler, who has often served as a guest host on "Performance Today" and appeared on various APM specials. She brings her own warmth, insight, and love for music to the role, ensuring a smooth and inspiring continuation of the show’s legacy.

As part of this transition, "The Piano Puzzler" segment will come to an end after October, given Fred’s instrumental role in its creation and production. A digital archive of "The Piano Puzzler" will soon be available for listeners—details to come.

Fred has shared his reflections on leaving the show on the program’s website. You can read his full message here and also send him a farewell note.

As Fred Child closes this remarkable chapter, WHRO-FM listeners can continue enjoying Performance Today with Valerie Kahler at the helm.

Tune in to Performance Today on WHRO-FM 90.3, Monday to Friday at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 6 p.m., and Sundays at 1 p.m.
