This Saturday at 1 p.m., WHRO-FM invites you to immerse yourself in the shimmering beauty of Georges Bizet’s "The Pearl Fishers," performed by Les Musiciens du Louvre, under the baton of Marc Minkowski. Recorded at the Théâtre de l’Archevêché in Aix-en-Provence in July 2025, this production captures all the exotic color and emotional tension that make Bizet’s early masterpiece unforgettable.
This broadcast is especially fitting, as Saturday also marks Bizet’s birthday. The French composer was born on October 25, 1838.
Set in ancient Ceylon, this opera tells the story of two friends, Nadir and Zurga, whose deep bond is tested when both fall in love with the same woman, the beautiful priestess Leïla, performed by Elsa Benoit. The two friends are performed by Pene Pati and Florian Sempey, and the cast also features Edwin Crossley-Mercer as Nourabad. Together, they all bring Bizet’s lush harmonies and heartfelt drama vividly to life, supported by the Grand Avignon Opera Chorus and the refined sound of Les Musiciens du Louvre.
