‘This Just In' Brings New Recordings to Inspire Your Saturday Evening

If you love discovering new recordings and hearing timeless music through fresh interpretations, “This Just In” is your perfect Saturday companion. Each week, Raymond Jones opens the door to the newest treasures in the classical world that keep the great tradition alive and evolving.

This week’s program opens with a fascinating rediscovery: Ferruccio Busoni’s completion of Franz Liszt’s unfinished “Fantasy on Two Motifs from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro.” Pianist Jiayan Sun brings this rarely heard work to life in a brilliant new recording from Bridge Records.

Our exploration of Nordic music continues with Wilhelm Stenhammar’s Symphony No. 2, performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Petter Sundkvist. And next we’ll hear the Pacifica Quartet and friends performing Erich Korngold’s String Sextet, a lush and harmonically rich chamber work included in a recent release from Cedille Records.

Also featured this week is cellist John Walz with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra under JoAnn Falletta, performing Ernest Bloch’s “Schelomo – The Hebraic Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra.” And finally, from the Lyrita label, we’ll hear Welsh composer Grace Williams’s Sinfonia Concertante, featuring pianist Clare Hammond with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Jan van Steen.

Join “This Just In” this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. and experience the newest sounds in classical music. Only on WHRO-FM 90.3 and online, through our Media Player or your favorite smart device.
