A Voyage through New Classical Releases on ‘This Just In’

Join host Raymond Jones this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM for “This Just In,” three hours of the freshest classical recordings from around the world.

The journey begins sailing the Mediterranean with Jacques Ibert’s “Ports of Call,” performed by the Buffalo Philharmonic under JoAnn Falletta. This vibrant piece appears on “The French in Spain,” released by Naxos a few months ago, capturing the colors and rhythms of Spain through the eyes of a French composer.

Next, we head north to Norway for Johan Svendsen’s Symphony No. 2 in Bb, part of our ongoing exploration of Brilliant Classics’ “Nordic Symphonies” collection. Bright, lyrical, and full of Romantic charm, Svendsen’s symphony offers a delightful listening experience.

A highlight of the evening is Adolf von Henselt’s Romantic Piano Concerto, performed by British barrister and piano virtuoso Paul Wee. With soaring melodies, tender lyricism, and inventive piano writing, this concerto delivers dramatic intensity across its three movements.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's birth, we present “Ballade for Violin and Orchestra,” performed by Ioana Petcu-Colan, leader of the Ulster Orchestra and accomplished soloist. This work’s charismatic melodies and dramatic flair showcase Coleridge-Taylor’s deep understanding of the violin.

We return to France with the Orchestre du Pays de Loire performing, on this occasion, Eric Korngold’s youthful “Sinfonietta,” a charming, energetic work composed at the age of 12.

From Richmond’s Raven Records comes Germaine Labole’s Organ Symphony, and we close the program with Schubert’s Impromptu No.1, reimagined in an orchestration by Charles Ives.

Experience these exciting new recordings and more this Saturday evening at 8:00 on WHRO-FM 90.3, or stream online via our Media Player.
