A Literary September on WHRO-FM

www.pexels.com

The air is turning crisp, days are getting shorter, and the kids are back to school. September is here, and our thoughts turn to all things scholarly. September 6 is National Read a Book Day. September 7 is International Buy a Book Day, and September 8 is International Literacy Day. WHRO-FM is hitting the books this September with a spotlight on music and literature for our daily "Arts and Letters" feature. Every weekday at 1 p.m., Jana Lee Ross will share a piece of music inspired by a literary work or author.

The great ladies of English literature will make elegant cameo appearances with works honoring the Brontë sisters and Jane Austen. Charles Dickens chimes in with a lucky cricket and perhaps a ghost or two. (Christmas in September? Why not!) And Sir Arthur Conan Doyle will make a mysterious entrance with a suite for Sherlock Holmes.

We will spend September 29 in Spain for a celebration of the 418th birthday of Miguel de Cervantes, author of the first modern novel, "Don Quixote." Cervantes’ windmill chaser from La Mancha has captured the imagination of composers from every century since his knightly debut in 1605, and we will hear from many of them. On September 30, we will have a late "Breakfast at Tiffany’s" to celebrate Truman Capote’s birthday.

Hit the books with WHRO-FM in September, every weekday at 1:00 for "Arts and Letters!"

Jana Lee Ross is a lifelong pianist and vocalist with a repertoire that blurs the lines between classical music and jazz. She hosts Mid-Day Classics on WHRO FM.
