This Saturday at 1 p.m., WHRO-FM brings you Jules Massenet’s heart-rending masterpiece “Werther,” in a performance from the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. Inspired by Goethe’s celebrated novel, the opera tells the story of an idealistic young poet whose love for Charlotte spirals into despair and tragic destiny.
Leading tenor Benjamin Bernheim stars in the title role and is joined by Marina Viotti as Charlotte. Jean-Sébastien Bou is her steadfast husband, Albert, Sandra Hamaoui is Sophie, and Marc Scoffoni is the Bailiff.
The performance features the Maîtrise des Hauts-de-Seine, prepared by chorus master Gaël Darchen, with the Orchestre National de France and Les Siècles under the baton of Marc Leroy-Calatayud.
