This Saturday, WHRO-FM continues its summer of world-class opera with the second chapter of Richard Wagner’s monumental Ring cycle: “Die Walküre.” Tune in this Saturday, August 16, at 1 p.m. for a thrilling performance from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano.
A sweeping tale of love, betrayal, and divine conflict, this work brings us some of Wagner’s most iconic music, including the electrifying “Ride of the Valkyries.” The opera follows the tragic love of Siegmund and Sieglinde, the defiance of the warrior-maiden Brünnhilde, and the moral struggles of the god Wotan, as the fate of gods and mortals hurtles toward inevitable change.
Christopher Maltman portrays the conflicted god Wotan, with Elisabet Strid as the fearless Brünnhilde and Natalya Romaniw as Sieglinde. Stanislas de Barbeyrac sings Siegmund, Soloman Howard is the menacing Hunding, and Marina Prudenskaya appears as the formidable Fricka. The cast is joined by an extraordinary ensemble of Valkyries, bringing Wagner’s epic vision to life.
