This Saturday at 1:00 p.m., WHRO-FM invites you to experience the grandeur and mystery of Puccini’s final opera, “Turandot,” in a spectacular production from the Royal Opera House in London.
Set in an imaginary, mythic China, Turandot tells the story of the cold and enigmatic Princess Turandot, who challenges her suitors with deadly riddles. When the unknown Prince Calaf solves them, he refuses to claim her unwilling hand without first winning her heart. With sweeping orchestration, powerful choruses, and unforgettable arias—most notably the iconic “Nessun dorma”—“Turandot” is a true operatic spectacle, blending exoticism, psychological depth, and Puccini’s masterful lyricism.
Sondra Radvanovsky stars in the title role, bringing vocal fire and dramatic intensity to one of opera’s most demanding soprano parts. Tenor SeokJong Baek takes on the heroic role of Calaf, with Gemma Summerfield as the devoted Liù and Adam Palka as the exiled king Timur. Rafael Payare conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
Don’t miss this electrifying performance of one of the most beloved operas in the repertoire, only on WHRO-FM 90.3 and online through our Media Player.
