Amy Irving and Amy Helm's tribute to Willie Nelson.. on The Best of Pickin

Tune in for this week's Best of Pickin, with music from actress-singer Amy Irving teaming with Amy Helm in her Willie Nelson tribute release "Always will Be." She covers ten of Nelson's songs on the new album that dropped in April. Also, music from the duo Watchhouse, The Irish Band Jigjam, Leftover Salmon, and the McPeak Brothers. The McPeaks hailed from Wytheville, Virginia and in the early 70s caught the ear of country-singer Mel Tillis. He arranged for them to record on the RCA Label. They toured with him as an opening act and also appeared on his syndicated television show. Some of the greats of country music- including Merle Haggard and Webb Pierce recorded some of their songs. They continued to record into the 1980s before retiring. Today, the McPeak Brothers are fondly remembered for their incredible songwriting, tight harmonies, and ability to transcend the boundary between Bluegrass and traditional Country Music. Why venture out on a Friday night- stay in with The Best of Pickin. Friday night at 10 on WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
