Each Saturday evening at 8 on WHRO-FM 90.3, Raymond Jones brings you the freshest sounds from the classical music world on “This Just In.” This week, prepare for a globe-spanning exploration of newly released recordings, from Sibelius to Suppé, Brahms to Florence Price.

The program opens with the sweeping Sibelius Symphony No. 7 in C, included in Brilliant Classics’ “Nordic Symphonies” collection and performed by the Berlin Symphony under Kurt Sanderling. We’ll also hear a vibrant set of Paganini Variations by Philip Wilby, performed by the Black Dyke Band with baritone Philip Gaul and Wilby himself at the organ, featured on Naxos’s “A Breathless Alleluia.”
Also from the Naxos catalog, we’ll enjoy the sparkling energy of Suppé’s “Poet and Peasant" overture with the Tonkunstler Orchestra Vienna under Ola Rudner, while the French label Le Palais des Degustateurs brings us Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D with violinist Ayla Erduran, the London Philharmonic, and conductor Carlos Paita.
Raymond Jones will also include a delightful performance of “Vilja’s Song” from “The Merry Widow” by Franz Lehar, arranged by Andrew Ennis and performed on the Wanamaker organ by Peter Richard Conte, with Ennis on flugelhorn, in a stunning release from Raven Records.
Florence Price’s Piano Quintet, featuring pianist Marc-André Hamelin and the Takács Quartet from the new Hyperion release “Dvořák & Price Piano Quintets,” adds a rich American voice to the program. And finally, we’ll hear the Symphony No. 6 “Sinfonia Tragica” by English composer Havergal Brian, performed by the English National Opera Orchestra under Martyn Brabbins, recently released on Hyperion.
All kinds of discoveries await you this Saturday at 8 p.m. on “This Just In” with Raymond Jones. Tune in to WHRO-FM 90.3 or listen online through our Media Player, and stay connected with the latest in classical music.
