Jazz Meets Classical on ‘This Just In’

‘This Just In’ returns this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM with three hours of fresh classical releases, and this week, host Raymond Jones offers a program with a distinctive, jazz-tinged edge, while also continuing our journey through the symphonic landscapes of the North.

The program begins with the “Blues Symphony” by Wynton Marsalis, a seven-movement work blending blues idioms and orchestral color, performed by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under Jader Bignamini, recently released on Pentatone.

Adding to the American jazz flavor, “This Just In” will feature Daniil Trifonov performing George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, backed by the Philadelphia Orchestra under Yannick Nézet-Séguin. This track is part of Trifonov’s recent album “American Story: North,” showcasing his versatility and rhythmic agility in a piece that blends Gershwin’s jazzy sparkle with classical craftsmanship.

The program also highlights Benjamin Britten’s Cello Sonata in C, performed by Sheku Kanneh-Mason with Isata Kanneh-Mason at the piano, from their new Decca album “Shostakovich & Britten.” This recording captures the warmth and clarity of the siblings’ musical dialogue, bringing new vitality to Britten’s expressive sonata.

In our ongoing exploration of Jean Sibelius’s symphonies, we will feature Symphony No. 6, performed by the Berlin Symphony Orchestra under Kurt Sanderling from the “Nordic Symphonies” collection by Brilliant Classics.

The program also includes “Ambervalia” by Ruth Gipps, performed by the BBC Philharmonic under Rumon Gamba, from the recent Chandos release “Gipps: Orchestral Works, Vol. 3.”

This Saturday’s show is the perfect companion for listeners eager to keep up with the freshest recordings in the classical music world, exploring the exciting intersections between jazz and classical, serene Nordic soundscapes, and rediscovered gems. Tune in at 8:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3, or listen online through our media player, to discover what’s new in the world of classical music with Raymond Jones.
