Each Saturday evening at 8:00, “This Just In” on WHRO-FM offers an invitation to explore what’s new in the classical recording world. Host Raymond Jones guides listeners through a carefully curated selection of recently released albums, rediscovered gems, and fresh interpretations that shed new light on the repertoire we thought we knew and introduce us to voices long unheard.

This week’s edition opens with a major new release from CPO Records: the “Fritiof Suite” by pioneering Swedish composer Elfrida Andrée. Recorded by the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra under Hermann Bäumer, this April 2025 release revives one of Scandinavia’s earliest female symphonists with a vivid orchestral narrative drawn from Nordic legend.
Another Nordic landmark follows with Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2, performed by the Berlin Symphony Orchestra under Kurt Sanderling. Included in the Brilliant Classics set “Nordic Symphonies,” newly released this spring, the recording presents Sibelius’s expansive and introspective soundscape that reflects the enigmatic Finnish landscape.
From the British Isles comes the “Overture to Henry V” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, in a new recording by the Kent Sinfonia under James Ross. This performance appears on “Royal Throne of Kings: Ralph Vaughan Williams and Shakespeare,” released earlier this year by Albion Records.
One of the most talked-about young artists in classical music today, Sheku Kanneh-Mason is featured in Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1, recorded with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla. This performance comes from Sheku’s acclaimed debut album “Inspiration” (Decca), which re-entered the spotlight with a deluxe reissue this year.
Another masterpiece comes courtesy of Benjamin Britten: his rarely performed “Spring Symphony,” now finally released after over a decade in the vaults. This live 2013 performance by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under David Atherton features a stellar vocal trio: Elisabeth Atherton (soprano and the conductor’s daughter), Jennifer Johnston (mezzo), and Andrew Kennedy (tenor).
Finally, “This Just In” presents the Violin Concerto by Irish composer Ina Boyle, performed by rising star Esther Abrami with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Irene Delgado-Jiménez, featured on the “Women” album from Sony Classical.
From premiere recordings to rediscovered treasures, “This Just In” continues to offer listeners the best of what's new in classical music. Join Raymond Jones this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3, or online, for a musical journey across centuries, continents, and artistic voices, old and new.
