WHRO-FM is proud to present “Proud to Be”—a musical program that honors the power of identity, authenticity, and creative expression. Airing on Saturday, June 21 at 5 p.m., this one-hour broadcast curated by Kevin O’Connor features a powerful blend of contemporary and classical works that reflect themes of personal truth, belonging, and emotional resilience.
The program opens with “Wavelengths” by Japanese-American composer Takuma Itoh, performed by Hub New Music. Ensemble violinist Magnolia Rohrer reflects on how exploring new chamber music mirrors the journey of self-discovery—digging deep to uncover who you truly are.
Composer Craig Hella Johnson shares his thoughts on Pride and the experience of composing “Considering Matthew Shepard,” a powerful oratorio written in response to the murder of a young gay man. Johnson, himself a gay composer, conductor, and artistic leader, founded Conspirare—a GRAMMY-winning choir known for its transformative performances. We’ll hear them perform Stephen Paulus’s moving choral work “The Road Home.”
For pianist Jonathan Biss, Pride is about embracing the entirety of who he is—finding joy in it and sharing it with the world. His deeply personal interpretation of Beethoven’s “Pathétique” Sonata captures that spirit beautifully.
Next, acclaimed pianist and composer Conrad Tao—known for his fearless and boundary-defying artistry—performs Ravel’s haunting “Ondine” from “Gaspard de la Nuit.” Tao speaks about how composing has given him a powerful way to express himself and share his perspective on life beyond the constraints of language and labels.
The program concludes with Brazilian composer Clarice Assad’s “Glitch,” performed by the Delgani String Quartet, followed by Caroline Shaw’s vibrant “Valencia,” performed by the GRAMMY-winning Attacca Quartet. Founding member Andrew Yee also shares their reflections on Pride and artistic identity.
Each piece in “Proud to Be” has been selected not just for its artistic merit, but for how it echoes the spirit of Pride: embracing one's true self and honoring the diverse voices that enrich our world.
