Tchaikovsky’s ‘The Queen of Spades’ Closes the Met’s Season This Saturday

The Metropolitan Opera’s 2024-25 season of Saturday matinee broadcasts concludes on June 7 with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s gripping drama “The Queen of Spades.” Based on Alexander Pushkin’s novella, this intense thriller follows Hermann, a soldier who seeks a legendary secret that will make him invincible at the gambling table. Tenor Arsen Soghomonyan makes his network broadcast debut in this demanding role, alongside soprano Sonya Yoncheva as Lisa, the woman whose love can’t save him from his descent into obsession and ruin.

The cast also features Violeta Urmana as the enigmatic Countess—Lisa’s grandmother and once a notorious gambler known as the “Queen of Spades.” Supporting roles are sung by Igor Golovatenko as Prince Yeletsky, Maria Barakova as Pauline, and Alexey Markov as Count Tomsky. Keri-Lynn Wilson conducts the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus, delivering Tchaikovsky’s lush and dramatic score with great intensity.

Join us this Saturday at 1 p.m. for the thrilling finale of the Met’s Saturday matinee season. Tune in to WHRO-FM 90.3 or listen online via the Media Player to experience this unforgettable live performance of “The Queen of Spades.”
