The Metropolitan Opera’s season of live Saturday matinee broadcasts continues on May 31 with Gioachino Rossini’s beloved comic masterpiece “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” (The Barber of Seville), airing this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3. This sparkling production features mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina as the spirited Rosina, returning to the Met after her acclaimed performance as Carmen. Joining her is tenor Jack Swanson in his network broadcast debut as the love-struck Count Almaviva, and baritone Andrey Zhilikhovsky as the clever and charismatic barber, Figaro.
The cast also includes Peter Kálmán as the overprotective guardian Doctor Bartolo, and Alexander Vinogradov as the scheming music teacher Don Basilio. Conductor Giacomo Sagripanti also makes his network debut, leading the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus in Rossini’s effervescent and virtuosic score—one of the most delightful and enduring works in the operatic canon.
