This Saturday, May 24, WHRO-FM 90.3 presents a special live broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera featuring the network premiere of “Antony and Cleopatra” by acclaimed contemporary composer John Adams. Adapted from Shakespeare’s tragic play, this opera tells the powerful story of the doomed romance between the Roman general Antony and the Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra. Bass-baritone Gerald Finley and soprano Julia Bullock star as the passionate lovers, while tenor Paul Appleby takes on the role of the ambitious Octavius Caesar, eager to claim control over the Roman Empire. The cast also includes Alfred Walker, Elizabeth DeShong, Brentan Ryan, Jared Ott, and Taylor Raven in key roles.
John Adams himself conducts the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus, bringing to life his dynamic and evocative score.
