Strauss’s ‘Salome’ Live from the Metropolitan Opera

The Metropolitan Opera’s 2024–25 Saturday matinee radio broadcasts continue on May 17 with “Salome,” Richard Strauss’s provocative one-act opera based on the scandalous play by Oscar Wilde. This gripping psychological drama, filled with obsession, desire, and deadly consequences, will be heard live at 1:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM.

South African soprano Elza van den Heever takes on the vocally and emotionally demanding title role of Salome—a young princess drawn into a spiral of lust and madness. Peter Mattei stars as the prophet Jochanaan (John the Baptist), whose rejection of Salome’s advances sets the tragic events in motion.

Joining the cast are Gerhard Siegel as the lecherous Herod, Michelle DeYoung as the vengeful Herodias, and Piotr Buszewski as Narraboth, the captain of the guard caught in Salome’s dangerous allure.

The performance features the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra under the direction of Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and showcases a powerful new production by director Claus Guth.

Don’t miss this thrilling live broadcast, airing Saturday, May 17 at 1:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3 or listen online through our Media Player.
