Travel back to 1975 with us and enjoy Rossini’s ‘L’Assedio di Corinto (The Siege of Corinth),’ a dramatic but rarely performed gem that marked the debut of the great Beverly Sills on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera. Tune in to WHRO-FM this Saturday at 1 p.m. as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of this remarkable production.
Soprano Beverly Sills stars as Pamira, a Corinthian woman in love with a Turkish nobleman but forced to marry a Greek who also loves her. The Turkish nobleman is portrayed by bass-baritone Justino Díaz, while the Greek suitor, Neocle, is sung by mezzo-soprano Shirley Verrett. Joining them is tenor Harry Theyard as Pamira’s father, Cleomene, the governor of Corinth. The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus are led by conductor Thomas Schippers in this historic performance that helped shine new light on Rossini’s serious operas beyond his comic masterpieces.
