Education Matters Returns Wednesday

Education Matters, the on-going WHRV series that examines up close the issues facing classroom teachers and educators returns this Wednesday with Dr. Elie Bracy, the Superintendent of the Portsmouth Public Schools. Dr. Bracy has served at the helm for the district for 10 years. In 2021, Dr. Bracy was named State Superintendent of the Year. He headed the Urban Superintendent’s Association of America as well as being the President Elect for the Virginia Association of School Superintendents. What's his vision for the Portsmouth Public Schools?  What are the challenges and needs for the division and what are his thoughts on the State's new "Road to Readiness" accountability system, which is set to take effect next year, and how is the division handling the new cell phone ban in schools?  We're taking your calls during an engaging conversation with Dr. Elie Bracy on Education Matters. Wednesday at noon on WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
