The Best of Pickin: Billy Strings, Blue Highway, Del McCoury, and Mac Wiseman

On this week’s Best of Pickin, we have new music from Billy Strings and his forthcoming album Highway Prayers ( due out next month) and the lead single from it “ Leadfoot.” His album “Home” won the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album in 2022. Also, music from Blue Highway and their debut album from 2001 entitled “ Still Climbing Mountains.” We’ll also hear from Robbie Ickes, who was an original member of the band, teaming with Trey Hensley and their Living in a Song release. Also, classic tracks from Larry Sparks, Mac Wiseman, Bobby Osborne, and others, including the Del McCoury Band, covering the classic Buffalo Springfield anthem “ For What It’s Worth” with Jason Carter on vocals. Two hours of both traditional and progressive Bluegrass, on the Best of Pickin. Friday night at 11 on WHRV.

Barry Graham used to arrive at WHRO with a briefcase full of papers and lesson plans. For 32 years he taught US and Virginia Government in the Virginia Beach Public Schools. While teaching was always his first love, radio was a close second. While attending Old Dominion, Barry was program director at WODU, the college radio station. After graduating, he came to WHRO as an overnight announcer. Originally intending to stay on only while completing graduate school, he was soon hooked on Public Radio and today is the senior announcer on WHRV. In 2001, Barry earned his Ph.D in Urban Studies by writing a history of WHRO and analyzing its impact upon local education, policy and cultural arts organizations.
