Local Students Explore Career in Media Production

What’s it like to be a media producer? Students at The Academies of Hampton found out this week. During “My Future, My Journey,” a career exploratory event, students heard first-hand experiences from professionals in various industries. WHRO producer Kenny Hopkins was on hand to discuss career options with students, demonstrate film equipment and editing software, and answer questions.

“The Academies of Hampton event was an excellent opportunity for students to learn about different career paths that are available to them through their magnet programs,” Hopkins explained. “I was able to engage with lots of bright young men and women, many of which were interested in media production and WHRO.”

The event featured exhibits from more than 60 businesses, and including rising 10 th-grade students from all Hampton high schools. The students who visited WHRO’s exhibit especially enjoyed posing with the various awards they may win some day.

“Through events like this, we can show that not only is video production a viable career path,” Hopkins said, “but also that WHRO is an integral part of our community. Who knows? Perhaps the next Bert Schmidt was in that group!”
