A Virginia Beach marsh restoration project is on pause unless the General Assembly takes action |
A proposed $46.5 million project to build marsh terraces in Bonney Cove at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is stalled due to permitting issues, despite having the funding.
Virginia Beach officials say the goal is to restore lost marshland and support seagrass growth.
However, the Virginia Marine Resources Commission signaled it couldn’t recommend the project because it would disturb existing seagrass, even though the initiative is designed to foster its long-term growth.

Virginia lawmakers are revisiting a long-debated question: Should the state stop holding elections every year and move to even-numbered years, in line with the federal calendar?
Proponents say consolidating elections could boost voter turnout, streamline the voting process and reduce campaign costs. Critics warn it could diminish Virginia’s national political significance and overwhelm voters with crowded ballots.
