Virginia Senator Mark Warner says he’s looking forward to learning more about the Chinese balloon that was shot down off the South Carolina coast this past weekend.
“I want to get a full brief from the intelligence community - when did we discover the balloon, when did we think it was going to be coming into American airspace...why was there not in place a protocol on how we deal with this sort of circumstance...” he says.
Warner says there should have been some ability for Chinese and American officials to talk to each other.
He says there are still plenty of unanswered questions:
“Relations with China have gotten very, very strained...in the normal course, there should have been some ability for Chinese and American officials to communicate with each other," Warner says.
It was a jet from Joint Base Langley-Eustis that shot the balloon down. Navy and Coast Guard ships stationed in Hampton Roads and divers are searching for debris.
