It may soon be more expensive to get your car back after it gets towed in Norfolk.
Norfolk’s City Council will consider increasing maximum tow fees at its upcoming meeting on Dec. 10.
City staff recommend rate hikes for all classes of vehicles, according to city documents.
The vast majority of cars and trucks on the road would be considered light vehicles, and would pay $200 per tow under the new rules. That’s $45 more than the current rate.
Medium vehicles like large pickup trucks would pay $350 for a tow, double the current fee.
Heavy vehicles above eighteen thousand pounds would pay 575 dollars — about a 64% increase.
The fee caps apply to tows from both private property and public areas, like city streets.
City documents show that the city’s Towing Advisory Board, made up of Norfolk police officers, towing company representatives and city residents, initially only wanted to increase the rates for light vehicles, and wanted rates to change depending on what days and times the tow was happening.
City staff recommended keeping a flat rate but increasing it across all vehicle weight classes, which the advisory board approved.
The increases would bring the fees for standard-sized cars and trucks in line with Virginia Beach, which voted last year to boost its own towing fees above its neighbors.
