From the CEO - April 2018

The topic of climate change hits close to home for us as Coastal Virginia is experiencing the highest rates of sea level rise on the East Coast. With so many military bases located here, military staff and leaders from surrounding cities are exploring solutions for the future.

More than 500 local residents took part in some of these research efforts last fall during “Catch the King,” an event that measured flooding during an unusually high—or “king”—tide. Filmmakers from the PBS Science Series NOVA were on hand along with WHRO’s production team, to film the event as part of a new documentary on climate change. That documentary, NOVA: Living with the Weather Machine, including the footage they shot locally, will air on April 18 at 8 p.m. just prior to the program on Bill Nye.

In addition to great television programs, we also have some exciting local events coming up this month. Writer’s Block will travel to the Eastern Shore on April 21. Join us to hear compelling performances from local poets and storytellers. You can also listen to past performances at whro.org/writersblock On April 26, we will host a screening of Little Women where you can preview the upcoming TV adaptation of the famous novel. Learn more and register to attend at whro.org/events

Our next Classical Open Mic Night will take place on April 25 at the Governor’s School for the Arts in Norfolk. These events have become quite popular. If you would like to perform, sign up through WHRO FM’s Facebook page or email wayla.chambo@whro.org

Lastly, I’d like to thank everyone who supported us last month during the TV portion of our spring pledge drive. Your support enables us to continue providing the quality programs you enjoy. If you didn’t get a chance to donate yet, we would love to hear from you. The radio portion of our spring drive runs April 14–20. Tune in and give us a call or visit our website to Support What You Love.

Enjoy the spring!
