Poquoson City Public Schools Show How Virginia is for Learners

WHRO is in the field this week filming in Poquoson. They are featuring the school district's teachers and students as part of the Virginia is for Learners initiative, an initiative developed to ensure every public school student is ready to thrive after graduation. The initiative emphasizes real-world skills like critical thinking, creative thinking, communication, collaboration and citizenship.

The Poquoson schools will soon be featured in a video by WHRO highlighting the ways they have developed this deeper-learning approach in their classrooms. Their hands-on projects help students apply the knowledge they gain and build skills for the future.

Poquoson City Public Schools is just one of the 19 school divisions that own and operate WHRO. The public media organization's unique ownership model—the only public media station nationwide to be owned by a consortium of local public school divisions—positions WHRO to be closely attuned to the work and needs of local educators. As a result, WHRO Education staff frequently present professional development workshops for educators, provide STEM and Literacy programs for elementary school students, host regional competitions like an annual spelling bee, writer's contest, and Great Computer Challenge; and design opportunities that bring teachers, caregivers and students together for shared learning.
