2007 General Assembly Election Interview Questionnaire
HearSay with Cathy Lewis ~ WHRV 89.5FM

21st District
R. W. "Bobby" Mathieson (D)

  • Why do you want to be a member of the Virginia General Assembly?

I have served as police officer in Virginia Beach for 25 years.  I have arrested drug dealers and sexual predators.  I have worked with neighborhood groups, civic leagues, and churches.  I have mentored children in schools.  No one in Richmond knows the streets and neighborhoods of this city like I do.  Protecting and serving the people of Virginia Beach and improving the quality of life in this city is how I spent my career.  I want to continue that commitment and dedication as a representative in Richmond by serving the needs and interests of the people in the 21st District.

  • What is the most pressing issue facing Virginians today? Facing the region?

Affordable healthcare is one of the most pressing issues facing Virginians.  With almost a million Virginians without health insurance, we must continue to find ways to reduce the number of uninsured and make healthcare more affordable. It will require a serious approach in the legislature by both parties.

I also believe we will have issues with the Hampton Roads Transportation Authority that will levy taxes, tolls and fees without accountability to voters.

  • The recently enacted Abusive Driver Fees have generated intense criticism from citizens and lawmakers alike. Where do you stand on the laws and, if you oppose them, how would you replace the transportation funds they were designed to generate?

The abusive driver fees unfairly target Virginia drivers while allowing out-of-state drivers to get a free pass.  We need an approach that is fair and applies to everyone.  We need to restructure some of the fees on some of the offenses.  The abusive driver fees need to be evaluated to determine if they are creating more hazardous roadways and any negative impact on the criminal justice system.  As a former police officer, I am concerned that these fees will increase the number of motorists driving with suspended licenses.

  • What is your view on The Hampton Roads Transportation Authority formed earlier this year?

Transportation is a state responsibility.  We elect people to go to Richmond and make the tough decisions on state policy.  The regional authorities shift the burden for transportation funding onto the backs of taxpayers in two regions of the state only for roads everyone uses.  The public deserves a body of legislators who will be deliberative and are willing to accept responsibility for resolving the transportation issues by putting all options back on the table for a real discussion, not a politically motivated one.
