The Adoption Journey

Celebrities have brought renewed attention and scrutiny to the adoption process.  With stars like Angelina Jolie, Meg Ryan, and-most controversially-Madonna adding to their families abroad, and in light of changing guidelines from China and other foreign countries, we'll explore the process of both international and domestic adoption.  Virginia's First Lady Anne Holton joins us to talk about the foster care initiative "For Keeps".  Also with us today, Adam Pertman, Executive Director of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute and Pediatrician Dr. Douglas Mitchell from Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters.

Segment B: Economics of the Arts
Arts and culture is a billion dollar industry in the Commonwealth, from tourism spending to recreational opporutunities, business sales to employment.  Yet many question the role government should play in funding arts organizations.  We'll talk about the dollars and sense of financing arts organizations in our community on today's HearSayGuests:  Charles Gray, Economics Professor at the University of St. Thomas and co-author of "The Economics of Art and Culture", Rob Cross - Virginia Arts Festival; Carla Johnson, President and Executive Director  - Virginia Symphony and Bill Hennessey, Executive Director of Chrysler Museum.

Cathy talks to veteran broadcast journalist Ted Koppel, senior news analyst for NPR, about the new Discovery Channel documentary "Our Children's Children's War".  Koppel explores the challenges the prolonged War on Terror presents and how America's military is trying to adapt.

Segment B: Battle of the Ironclads
The course of the Civil War was transformed with the world's first combat between ironclads.  Exactly 145 years after the historic battle fought in Hampton Roads between Confederate ironclad Virginia and the Union ironclad Monitor, the USS Monitor Center opens at the Mariner's Museum in Newport News.  The center focuses on the 1860s and the events, experiences and lifestyles of the time.  We'll get a look at history in the making today with our guests historian John Quarstein and Anna Holloway, the Curator of the USS Monitor Center.
