Living Culture: SMOKING GUN~VIRGINIANS AND TOBACCO
It would be hard to overstate the importance of tobacco to the culture and economy of Virginia over the past 400 years. Historians note that from the Jamestown colony until the late twentieth century, tobacco was the main agricultural crop in the Commonwealth and a main economic driver. Yet, we also are aware of the tremendous health risk which has the city of Norfolk once again looking at the feasibility of a restaurant smoking ban. We continue our "Living Culture" series in partnership with Port Folio Weekly by examining the conflicting relationship we have with tobacco. Should we be given the freedom to smoke or inhale second-hand smoke, as long as we are fully informed and educated of all the dangers? Let's talk about it on today's HearSay.

Segment A: THE RACE IS ON
With all 140 seats up for election this year, Virginia's lawmakers had much motivation to make a positive impression on voters during the 2007 General Assembly session. Republicans hold a 23-17 majority in the Senate and occupy 57 of 100 House seats, but negative backlash over new transportation legislation could put many political futures at risk. We'll talk about it on today's HearSay.
Segment B: JAMES GILMORE
A candid conversation with former Virginia Governor James Gilmore III. He recently ended his long-shot bid for the White House. Gilmore campaigned as the "true conservative" in the battle for the GOP presidential nomination. Cathy talks to him about a possible run for the U.S. Senate, his involvement in the November state legislative elections and invites you to call in with your questions and comments.

HearSay Classic: ABSTINENCE VS. SAFE SEX
The federal government has invested millions of dollars in sex-education programs for public schools that emphasize abstinence. Yet, according to a study ordered by Congress, students who took part in sexual abstinence programs were just as likely to have sex as those who didn't. On this archive edition, we discuss how everything from “purity pledges” to “hook-ups” has changed the way young people approach sexuality. Guests: Llew Roberts, nationally certified as a sexuality educator; Lakita Garth, social commentator and abstinence speaker; writer and women’s rights activist Jennifer Baumgardner; and Laura Sessions Stepp, author of “Unhooked: How Young Women Pursue Sex, Delay Love and Lose At Both”.
