Online Course Development Instructional Designer
Reports to: Project Manager
Position Description: The Instructional Designer (ID) is responsible for planning, designing, and developing interactive Web applications and technologies for online courses developed by WHRO on behalf of and in cooperation with the public schools in southeastern Virginia. The ID is responsible for providing advanced support using web-authoring tools to design online content. The ID assists content developers in new technology and delivery systems. The ID participates in creating interactivities, increasing the level of usability and prescriptive learning in online courses, monitoring adherence to 508 and SCORM compliance, and creating application customizations. Extensive experience using Dreamweaver and Photoshop/Fireworks is required. Experience with advanced Flash development is strongly desired.
Education: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of two years experience in the Information and/or Educational Technology field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Convert text-based content into interactive and engaging online content
- Manage the course in the web application program
- Ensures development criteria and instructional design standards are met and implemented
- Ensure that sound instructional design practices are adhered to by the content developers
- Work with the content developers to identify where interactive activities are appropriate
- Provide support for web application software, graphic design software, resources, activities and assessments
- Communicate unresolved curriculum issues and concerns to Project Manager
- Monitors the timeline and module development for each project
- Ensures that 508 and copyright requirements are met and implements in all courses.
- Researches and uses development technology to enhance interactivity of assigned projects.
- Researches and uses development technology including but not limited to Flash, databases, JavaScript, and SCORM to increase level to adaptability, usability, and prescriptive learning.
- Meets professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, coordinating resources and meetings in an effective and timely manner, and demonstrating respect for others.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by his/her supervisor.
Technical Competencies and Skills:
- Advanced skills in web and graphic design and the ability to master off-the-shelf e-learning software packages (e.g. Articulate, Raptivity, Captivate, Camtasia, etc.)
- Knowledge of web development standards such as 508 compliance, W3C and WCAG, and SCORM
- Meets deadlines and handles diverse tasks simultaneously using prioritization and delegation
- Works and collaborates with project manager, content developers, and other instructional designers
- Evaluates resources for applicability to projects
- Reviews courses and provides constructive feedback
- Applies knowledge of training best practices and instructional design principles
- Knowledge of course management systems such as Desire2Learn
