Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Association, Inc. DBA WHRO
(“WHRO”) is a diverse regional public telecommunications center serving more than 1.6 million citizens in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.  In addition,
WHRO reaches beyond the region through its website.  WHRO promotes education,
culture and citizenship to the citizens of Hampton Roads, Virginia, through a variety of
telecommunications services.  Viewers and listeners tune in to broadcast programming
on WHRO’s public television and radio stations and stream programming from its
website.  Since its founding 46 years ago to support education, WHRO has employed
creativity and technology to serve its mission to enrich audiences through content that
educates, entertains and promotes understanding.  WHRO delivers educational and new
media services to students and educators as well.

It is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission to operate two non-commercial public television stations – WHRO TV 15 and WHRO Digital (including WHRO HD, WHRO Kids and WHRO Create); two non-commercial public radio stations – WHRO 90.3 FM and WHRV 89.5 FM; Educational Broadband Services (EBS) and satellite transmission facilities and the WHRO Radio Reading Service for the Print Handicapped.  Its website features live audio streams for WHRO, WHRV, the Radio Reading Service, radioNtenna, the 1920’s Radio Network and Connoisseur Classics.  Studios, satellite, technical control, teleconference facilities and offices are housed in Norfolk, Virginia, and a radio broadcast facility is located in Newport News, Virginia.  Major transmission facilities are located in Suffolk, Virginia, and multi-point microwave relay towers are dispersed throughout southeastern Virginia and its Eastern Shore.

One of the goals of our strategic plan is to create an organizational culture that is strategically aligned and that rewards teamwork, innovation and learning.  Now in our 2008 fiscal year, with an annual budget of almost $14 million, one of our priorities is to develop a world-class workforce – become one of the best places to work!

Currently, we are seeking a hands-on Controller.  This is a mid-management position that reports to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO).  Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare all financial reports
  • Analyze variances between budget – actual – projection
  • Plan and manage external audit including related tax returns
  • Coordinate and assist CFO with annual budget process
  • Oversee day-to-day financial functions including A/P, A/R, G/L and payroll
  • Supervise three direct reports
  • Other duties as assigned


Requirements:
Experience preparing accrual basis financial reports, internal management reports and variance analysis.  Planning and management of external audit experience.  Experience in coordinating / assisting in annual budget process.  Minimum seven years progressively responsible accounting experience, including a minimum of two years supervisory responsibilities.  Experience with accounting software applications.  Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, particularly Excel. 

Preferences / Pluses:
Bachelors’ degree in Business Administration or equivalent preferred; additional experience may be substituted for degree; CPA a plus.  Public accounting experience as an auditor preferred.  Experience with Solomon and / or Abra and / or FRx accounting software applications a plus.  Non-profit accounting experience preferred.  Grants management exposure a plus.
